Last summer I was at a pool party……
I could end this story here and you would probably have your answer, but I will back up a little bit.
I’m not totally sure when it all happened, but at one point in my early 40’s I started gaining weight. It happens, and you hear all the time that it gets harder to keep weight off and your metabolism slows as you age, but man, I couldn’t figure out what happened. Hormones? Vitamin D Deficiency? Was I underestimating my calories all of a sudden? Whatever it was, I kept creeping up and up and up on the scale. I wasn’t happy about it, but I don’t think I ever really realized how much I had gained until….the pool party….or I should say the pictures that came out after the pool party.
The funny thing is, at the party I was talking to some of the other mom’s about Keto. It was a cheer party – of course, as my life revolves around cheer right now. Some of the moms were talking about how they were doing the Ketogenic Diet and that they had lost 40-50 pounds. Wow! I had heard of Keto before and actually tried it for about a week.
I didn’t think much more about it – until the pictures from the pool party came out the next day in our team GroupMe. Everyone was talking about what a fun time it was, but I couldn’t get over the picture that was posted of my daughter, Ella and me. I looked bloated and I hated the way I looked, especially next to my cute daughter, Ella.
It was at that moment that I said I was going to try Keto again – and I haven’t looked back since.
That was 7 months ago and I am about halfway to my goal weight. If I wanted to lose quicker I could probably do my macros. I’m happy with my slow and steady weight loss and I feel like I look like I have lost more weight than I really have. My body has started to transform even more than the weight loss.
The reason I’m not super concerned with the gradual weight loss (vs. super fast like you hear in so many keto transformation stories) is that I feel so much better now. I suffered from migraines and now they are cut in half – maybe more. I always felt like I was on the verge of a migraine before and I don’t feel that way any more. I had neck pain that made it hard to turn my neck to the right and I would get out of bed in the morning in pain. That is 100% gone – it is crazy! My mood is improved considerably and I have way more energy than before. No more crashing after dinner because my blood sugar was all over the map. I have diabetes in my family and I had gestational diabetes with my 2nd pregnancy, so I’m pretty sure looking back I was somewhat insulin resistant before starting Keto. Between that and inflammation, I was a mess and I didn’t even know it! Before Keto I would get so hungry every day at 4pm and I would snack – it was out of control.
The funny thing is, for as bad as that all sounds, I have never been real overweight and I always considered myself relatively healthy (minus the migraines and some allergies.). I work out several times a week and we have never eaten a lot of processed foods. I don’t think I realized how messed up I really was!! I’m your typical mom. I just ignored a lot of things and carried on….because that is what mom’s do, right?
So, I started Keto the day after the pool party and it was pretty easy. I don’t remember getting the dreaded Keto Flu (I do like my salt so that probably helped) and I absolutely loved what I could eat. At first I didn’t eat as many veggies as I do now, but I transitioned into Keto and Ketosis pretty quickly. I did miss the sugar at first, I won’t lie. I learned to do some Keto baking and that did the trick! Since then it has honestly been the easiest way of eating that I have ever tried. Its really almost effortless. I have done tons of research throughout this journey because there is a lot of controversy about Keto and I wanted to make sure I wasn’t harming myself more than helping. I’m convinced that I am healthier than I ever have been and research or not, my body’s positive reaction is all I need to be convinced. I have gone from trying this as a temporary diet to lose weight to a way of eating that I intend to stick with for a very long time.
I will share more about what the Ketogenic diet is on the blog along with how I do Keto. I still cook for girls that eat carbohydrates, so many of my posts will be about making meals for Keto and Carb eaters.
Would you ever consider doing keto? If you do Keto, what prompted you to start? Did you have a pool party picture moment, too??
